While fan communities are as old as popular culture itself, the Internet has provided perhaps unprecedented opportunity for legions of fans the world over to share their passions in a collective forum. The 'Yuricon.org' website links fans of 'yuri': a genre of Japanese anime (animation) or manga (comics) that is loosely defined as material that depicts love between girls and women. The lesbian texts (and subtexts) of this material are, however, often far from explicit, and not all of the varied fans that visit the website identify as lesbian. In this article, I examine the complex reading frames that yuri fans employ to decode their favourite anime and manga as objects of yuri desire, and to create a virtual community united in the pleasure of viewing animated women together romantically and sexually.
